SUMMARY OF CONCERNS
REGARDING THE CAIRNS AIRPORT LAND USE PLAN
The Machans Beach Community Association submitted a detailed opposition to the Cairns Airport Draft Land Use Plan (LUP) in February 2011 during the community consultation period. The concerns expressed were as follows.
- Loss of up to 100 hectares of mature, dense mangrove wetland/habitat;
- Threat to an area of natural significance adjoining the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park;
- Loss of storm surge amelioration;
- Increased risk of flooding from bunding of the floodplain;
- Noise levels incompatible with Australian Noise Exposure Forecast contours; and
- Loss of amenity and quality of life for residents.
The desired outcome for our organisation and the residents of the Barron delta is that airport operations remain within their already cleared boundaries and that no further encroachment on, or destruction of, the surrounding natural environment be gazetted in this or any future LUP.
